Austria 2 v 0 Northern Ireland
12 October 2005 at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. The autumn weather in Central Europe was actually quite mild as the GAWA army arrived from staging posts such as Bratislava, Linz and Prague. The Schwedenplatz in the centre of the city became a sea of green and white and the local bars did a brisk trade.
The stadium itself was quite a distance away, at the end of a big public park. Many of the fans lapped up the beer on sale outside the ground without realising it was alcohol free ! The GAWA fans were located behind the goal of the circular stadium and were impressed by the facilities. Unfortunately, although the attendance was quoted as being 29,000, the crowd appeared a lot smaller.
A bright start raised the optomism but this was punctured by a goal against the run of play before the interval and some inconsistant refereeing. But at least, a good time was had by all !

If you look closely, you will see several of the Bangor NISC members in this photo by Gary Hancock which appeared in the Ireland's Saturday Night. More pictures below.
